What the Heck is That?!
First time mom took me to the grandkids’ house I freaked out. My nose was working overtime. I couldn’t figure out all the smells. Yea, I knew about the little dog, cats of course, the kids, but what was that strange smell?
It was everywhere. Just off the kitchen I spied a cage. I couldn’t believe my eyes. There was a little hairy creature in there and I wanted to get it. Oh yea, it looked real “chase-able.” Something that would probably be a lot of fun to track and run down. You know, like a hunt.
Maybe it’s a badger! I just had to find out. I tried to get in the cage but my nose wouldn’t fit. Mom said the critter’s name was Angel. Angel?! What’s that? I tried to bite her nose when she poked it through her cage. Mom scolded me. She told me I should be kind and loving to her. She said, “Scampy, she’s a little ferret and she’s your friend.” I wasn’t so sure about that. I really just wanted to have a go at her; chase her for a while and see what would happen.
I get a little jealous when mom holds her. Hey, she’s my mom. Once in a while she’d let me touch her and sniff her. Angel was nice to me. She even had toys… It took us a while to become friends though. She had a kind of sneaky, slithering way about her that made me excited and I just wanted to run and catch her. It was probably a good thing mom was there to supervise, I didn’t trust myself, I am a hunter after all.
The grandkids have a little dog they call Popcorn. Popcorn and I are best friends. We like to play with our toys and sometimes the kids dress us up. Popcorn looks really cute. But her clothes won’t fit me. I have special sweaters and jackets just for my long dachshund body and most days they keep me nice and warm. Once in a while Popcorn and I sneak outside by ourselves. It’s so much fun to explore and sniff for critters. Mom gets real mad at us ‘cause we’re not supposed to cross the street by ourselves.
Then there’s my other friends. Well, maybe not friends, more like acquaintances. Bob & Harry. These guys are HUGE. First time I saw them they were hiding under a bed. There in the pitch black dark space were two pairs of eyes glowing back at me. I could feel the fur on my neck stand up. I was scared, I mean really freaked out. And I don’t scare easy, I’m a badger dog.
The one called Bob was curious and kind of friendly. But that other one, Harry, he hissed and growled and scared the daylights out of me. I hear he creeps around at night when everyone’s sleeping. Rumors are he’s as big as a lion. And from the looks of their litter box poo, it could be true! That’s one kitty I wouldn’t want to meet in the hallway.
I didn’t even bother to sniff their food dishes. What if Harry saw me and went after me? And you know how I love to sniff stuff. I am a hound, don’t ‘cha know?
Yea, I steer clear of their room. As much as I love a good chase I do have some sense and really hate getting beat up, especially by a cat.
Angel, Popcorn and I are good buds now. I try to be nice to people and their pets. Like mom says, “Be loving and kind all the time no matter what.” Sometimes it’s hard when I’m scared. But then I remember my mom and dad will protect me. They’re the best.
Like my auntie says, “Scampy, you’ve died and gone to heaven.” I think this heaven is a great place to be.

My mom makes the best treats with this food dryer. She says to finely grate ½ c. or more of carrot, ½ c. or more of sweet potato or yam and mix with one-half to two-thirds of a lb. of pasture-raised, organic ground beef.
Fill the jerky gun and shoot sausages onto the trays and dry for 1 and 1/2 hours on highest setting. Store in an airtight container in refrigerator up to 1 week or freeze.
Your (animal) family is gonna love this! My Auntie Dawn’s kitty sure does.
