Tips to Safeguard Your Pet

While it is well known dogs shouldn’t be given chocolate, did you know there’s a host of other items including cleaning products that can seriously harm or kill your beloved pet?

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) thousands of calls are made to their Poison Control Center each year due to accidental poisoning.

DOGS

In addition to all kinds of chocolate products, protect your canine friend from:

  • Avocadoes

  • Tomatoes

  • Macadamia nuts

  • Caffeine

  • Coffee

  • Alcohol or foods containing alcohol

  • Yeast dough

  • Grapes & raisins

  • Salt and any processed foodstuff

  • Milk

  • Processed food

  • Onions & garlic

  • Xylitol- A healthy sweetener alternative for people. Potentially fatal for dogs.

  • Prescription medications

  • Over the counter medications

  • Cleaning products

Dogs are a bit like children when their needs are not being met. And they can get naughty, real naughty. A curious and bored dog is a menace to him/herself and to her pet parents! Treat them as you would a small child and safeguard them by putting hazardous products out of their reach. Know what foods they should never have and give them the love, attention and healthy food they deserve.

CATS

  • Prescription medications

  • Over the counter medications

  • Cleaning products

  • Milk

  • Salt

  • Onions

  • Garlic

  • Chives

  • Processed food

Curious by nature, cats will get into just about anything that “smells” good. They’re quite intelligent too. My cats have learned to open cupboards, boxes of cat treats, even the refrigerator! Treat them like children and keep garbage, human food and toxic medicines out of their reach.

Your furry friend needs lots of love and attention. Much like children, they will misbehave if their needs are not being met. An unhealthy diet can create behavior issues also.

Be mindful of the cleaning products you use in your home. Cats, like people, are very sensitive and hazardous chemicals are potentially poisonous to your feline friends. Cleaning chemicals are very toxic and that’s another good reason to choose products that are safe for your family and the environment. Making your own cleaning products is very easy and much more economical.

BIRDS

There are many types of birds and it’s always a good rule of thumb to follow their native diet. Birds typically eat nuts, berries, grasses and insects.

Do not feed your bird:

  • Avocadoes

  • Onions

  • Celery-the stringy parts

  • Garlic

  • Tomatoes

  • Processed junk food

  • Cleaning Products

NEWSLETTER

I cannot imagine a world without the love of my family pet. Much like people, our family pets need an optimal diet to not only survive but to thrive. Feeding your pet low quality food will result in disease (possible future vet bills and grief) and a shortened lifespan.

If you feed yourself and your pet the best quality food your circumstances allow you will both feel better and the quality of your lives will be much improved.

I have made my pet’s food in the past, today I purchase it from a reputable pet store that has not only integrity, but compassion for animals.

Pet ownership is an honor and a blessing. Treat your family member like the treasure they are by learning all you can to create a loving and wholesome environment they can call home. You will be rewarded in ways you could never imagine.

If your pet should ever be poisoned call the ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.
