Surviving (and Thriving!) Winter

The short dark days of winter are approaching here in the Northland. Fall leaves hark the imminent arrival of winter’s rain (or snow) and its accompanying damp weather.

Here in the Coastal Pacific Northwest, the mental psyches of its inhabitants are shifting to survival mode. Coffee, consumed at rates that rival tea consumption in China, are gearing up. Adjusting mental attitudes is especially important and caffeine, with its ability to manipulate the brain and produce mind-altering euphoria, makes it the West Coast’s most popular drink of choice.

It's All How You See It

Fortunately, there are less expensive and healthier ways of surviving and actually thriving, the dreary months of winter. It’s all about attitude. You can change your experience and your life, just by changing your mental habits. If you believe it’s going to be a bad day because it’s raining or snowing outside, guess what? It will be a bad day.

Each day you awaken, you have a choice to create a beautiful day or a terrible day. It’s all up to you. Your thoughts, not the weather create peace or unhappiness. When you change how you see the weather you will feel better. For example, when the rains set in, I bless them. The rain is replenishing the parched aquifers, giving snow to the mountains that feed the streams, ensuring a plentiful bounty for the following summer.

These words never rang truer during my years of commuting great distances each winter in rural Minnesota. Months after returning to my home state of Washington I continued to have “Minnesota winter driving nightmares.” Over a decade later the memories have faded. The contrast of experiencing the sheer terror of my winters there have brought me to the humble realization, it could be worse. I decided the rain is not all that bad. Cold? This is nothing.
