    Do-it-Yourself

    Scouring Cleanser

Scrubbing up baked on messes and counter stains is probably the last thing on your fun list. I know it’s not my favorite thing to do. Back when I was growing up and there was a tough job ahead, the dreaded words, “elbow grease,” meant only one thing: WORK. Not just a little job like weeding part of the yard or garden. Effort. A lot of effort that usually resulted in sweat and frustration. Fortunately, we had a special “store-bought” weapon. You’ll find it at the end of this article.

Clean and sparkling sink with scouring cleanser across the top as a title.

Alarmingly, scouring cleansers are loaded with harmful and untested chemicals.

Even if you wear gloves you’re still breathing the noxious fumes, leaving toxic residue on your counters and floors; increasing risk of contamination to food, kids and pets. Many chemicals used in scouring cleansers and other cleaning products are so harmful they’re on the US government’s hazardous material list! And because they’re available to the public, we think they’re safe.

Label discribing higest hazard to safest in household cleaning labels. Waste Management Program product hazarders.

DIY cleansers shouldn’t be toxic to be effective. And they shouldn’t cost a lot of money. This DIY scouring cleanser is safe for you, the family, pets and the planet. Costs only pennies to make and you’ll feel a lot better knowing you’re not poisoning to clean or protect.

Why pay for expensive advertising that sells you toxic, cancer-causing chemicals? (Sorry about that, I hate to be the bearer of bad news.)

Despite commercial advertising, you don’t need toxic chemicals to get things clean; just nature made ingredients that naturally kill germs, deodorize (leaving a clean, fresh scent) and get your house sparkling clean. And no toxic chemical residue that lingers on little hands and animal feet.

Warnings and Precautions for DIY Cleaning Products

    1.    Never reuse chemical cleaning product bottles. Vinegar and alcohol are solvents and will pick up any traces of chemicals from the old bottle.

    2.    Always label your bottle. Use a marker or label to clearly mark what is in the bottle. Add the date so you’ll know if your product is fresh. Old DIY cleaning mixtures can lose effectiveness over time.

    3.    Store out of reach of children and pets.

Use on counters, sinks, bath tubs, and anywhere you need extra scrubbing help.

     Ingredients

1 c. baking soda- buy in bulk if possible

    ½ c. washing soda

½ c. salt (non-iodized)- buy in bulk.  Avoid common table salt which is toxic

5 drops lemon essential oil- typically used for its fresh, clean scent, optional

    Instructions:

Pour ingredients into a jar. A pint glass jar works well.

Mix well. For a convenient shaker, purchase our recommended 16 oz. Mason jar with shaker lid.

    Cleaning Tips:

Wet area prior to cleaning. If your job is really big and dirty, pour or spray undiluted vinegar on area. Vinegar is a powerhouse when it comes to cleaning.

Sprinkle cleanser over area and let sit for at least 5 minutes.

    Scrub with a sturdy brush.

Rinse with vinegar if you have a really dirty job to tackle.

Note: May scratch delicate surfaces. Test a small area prior to using

    Scored an F

Both products have health, environment, and disclosure concerns.

Comet cleanser received an F because of its poor disclosure of ingredients. Without knowing what is in the product, its health/environmental risks cannot be measured.

Bar Keeper’s Friend ingredients have evidence of kidney and urinary effects; nervous system effects; general systemic/organ effects and skin allergies and irritation.

If it isn’t safe, why is it for sale? That’s a good question. Most of us take our health and safety for granted.

Here’s why folks are allowed to poison their families, homes and environment.

Why Are U.S. Companies Allowed to Sell Toxic Products to Consumers?

The U. S. Chemical Industry has a lot of buying (bribing) power in Washington. $800 billion- annual sales in 2016- supports lobbyists and the politicians that allow the 80,000 + unregulated chemicals to poison Americans and others around the globe.

The media- chiefly funded and owned by various chemical companies uses psychological persuasion; consistent and repetitious advertising to manipulate and influence the public.

Unscrupulous corporations are banking on the public’s innocence and naivete. Understanding the “herd instinct” will not only give you insight behind the current subliminal conditioning affecting Americans and many others around the world, but also empower you to protect your family and our planet.

HINT: If it’s advertised on television, don’t buy it,

and certainly don’t believe it. That includes the “news” also.

With virtually no regulation of the 80,000+ chemicals used in food, cleaning, home & yard & personal care products, consumers risk their health and the health of the planet every time they purchase an item that is not organic or ethically sourced (certified organic/green or EWG verified).

Fortunately, we have the Environmental Working Group (EWG) on our side. EWG is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment. When you get the chemicals out of your life, you get healthier, and help safeguard our precious planet, its family and its resources.

    Safer Products

Although each product is “safer” than commercial brands, however, one should always be cautious and keep any household cleaner out of the reach of children and pets.

All Are Rated A+ by the Environmental Working Group

*Important Note: Personal care and cleaning product makers change formulations periodically. We do our best to stay abreast of any changes. Always read labels and if you should find a product that we’ve recommended yet no longer endorsed by the EWG, please contact us with details at http://www.edenscorner.com/contact-

As we continue to vote with our dollars and buy safe products that are ethically sourced/created, we send a loud message to the chemical companies:

We care about our family’s health and the health of future generations.

Pregnant and breastfeeding moms should be especially careful for the sake of themselves as well as their developing children.
