Do-it-Yourself

Natural Toothpaste

The best reason to DIY natural toothpaste (besides the incredible savings!) is the health and safety of your family. Most commonly advertised brands contain multiple ingredients that are known to cause cancer and other health problems.

Young children are especially at risk for poisoning because they often swallow it. Why children and adults should never use conventional toothpaste, see below.

Woman brushing with natural toothpaste.

Ingredients:

4 Tablespoons Organic Unrefined Coconut Oil – Inhibits bad bacteria in your mouth

2 Tablespoons Baking Soda – gently abrasive

1 Tablespoon Xylitol Powder (Grind it if necessary, into a fine powder) - Xylitol inhibits cavities by denying plaque bacteria, the sugar it needs to erode tooth enamel

10 drops of Cinnamon Essential Oil – antifungal, antibacterial, antimicrobial, anti-parasitic properties

10 drops of Clove Essential Oil – antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiseptic

10 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil – antimicrobial properties, freshens bad breath

30 drops of Liquid Trace Minerals – Minerals build healthy bones

Small glass or BPA free jar with lid.

Directions:

Place all ingredients in a small bowl. Use a fork and mix well. Finish with a small spatula and scrape into a container. Add a bit of water if it should dry out.

Use caution when mixing essential oils. Cinnamon and clove oils can cause skin irritation,

DO NOT APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE SKIN.

Dilute before using.

Note: Run hot water down your drain for 30 seconds or so after you finish brushing. This will ensure pipes are clear. Good idea for soap residue also.

Tragically, parents are often unaware that fluoride is an unapproved drug and toothpaste labels carry an

FDA CFR – Code of Federal Regulation Title 21.

Warning Label: Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center Immediately.

Fluoride is said to be safe. It’s classified as a drug, but the FDA never approved it as such. Why then, should parents call poison control center if their child should swallow it?

Fluoride also lowers IQ (when consumed in drinking water), weakens bones, and causes mottling and browning of teeth and is toxic!

Keep this number handy should you or your family member be poisoned.

“Estimating the incidence of toxic fluoride exposures nationwide also is complicated by the existence of biases. Parents or caregivers may not notice the symptoms associated with mild fluoride toxicity or may attribute them to colic or gastroenteritis, particularly if they did not see the child ingest fluoride. Similarly, because of the nonspecific nature of mild to moderate symptoms, a physician’s differential diagnosis is unlikely to include fluoride toxicity without a history of fluoride ingestion.”

Flashy packaging and clever advertising deceives parents and the public. Since the 1950’s Campaign to Fluoridate America, we’ve been believing a lie: Fluoride is safe, effective and necessary. ADA endorsements lend credibility because we have been taught to believe the “professionals.” Dentists do not make nor sell toothpaste and are not in the “chemical business.” They are mandated to adhere to strict rules set by the ADA. The ruling authority that dictates their dental practice.

One common brand is proud to display the ingredients in their children’s toothpaste even though they are known chemical toxins. Saccharin, artificial colorings, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS is a registered fungicide & pesticide and commonly found in shampoos and other personal care items), propylene glycol (and other harmful chemicals known to be carcinogenic and toxic to the human body.

These chemicals have no business being in a person’s mouth, or anywhere near their bodies.

“Your mouth is actually one of the most absorbent places in your entire body, so chemicals lurking in your toothpaste get a fast-track into your bloodstream.”

-J. Mercola, M.D.

Why Are U.S. Companies Allowed to Sell Toxic Products to Consumers?

The U. S. Chemical Industry has a lot of buying (bribing) power in Washington. $800 billion- annual sales in 2016 supports lobbyists and the politicians that allow the 80,000 + unregulated chemicals to poison Americans and others around the globe.

The media- chiefly funded and owned by various chemical industries- uses psychological persuasion; consistent and repetitious advertising to manipulate and influence the public.

With virtually no regulation of the 80,000+ chemicals used in food, cleaning, home & yard & personal care products, consumers risk their health and the health of the planet every time they purchase an item that is not organic or ethically sourced (certified organic, green or EWG verified).

Unscrupulous corporations are banking on the public’s innocence and naivete. Understanding the “herd instinct” will not only give you an understanding behind the current subliminal conditioning affecting Americans and many others around the world, but also empower you to protect yourself and your family.

Why pay for expensive advertising that sells you toxic, cancer-causing chemicals? (Sorry about that, I hate to be the bearer of bad news.) See how your current toothpaste rates on the toxicity scale here.

HINT: If it’s advertised on television, don’t buy it,

and certainly don’t believe it. That includes the “news” also.

both brands scored poorly for Overall Hazards; asthma/respiratory, skin allergies, irritation to eyes, skin or lungs, developmental/reproductive toxicity, bioaccumulation, organ system toxicity, cancer, occupational hazards, and ecotoxicology (environmental pollution concern).

As more of us choose to vote with our dollars and buy safe products, the chemical companies will get the message. Oh, and don’t be fooled by highly advertised personal care products that claim to work wonders brightening teeth and protecting against cavities. A closer look reveals their products to be expensive, contain dangerous chemicals and are toxic to the environment.

Parents should be especially careful for the sake of themselves as well as their developing children.

The Environmental Working Group, in a ground-breaking initiative to uncover the truth about toxic chemicals in household products, found even some hyped as “green,” or “natural,” can inflict serious harm and present severe risks to children who may ingest, spill, or breathe their fumes.

highlights the worst of the worst. Many of these cleaners are banned in Europe. (And very popular in America.) It is evident, European governments oversee their chemical industries and care about the safety of their citizens.
